NEW BEGINNINGS

Dr. James Willard Caldwell, “Dr. Willard” as many of his friends knew him, worked with his father as Steamboat Rock’s physicians until his father’s death, and then continued until his own death in March of 1949. His grandfather, had also served the community as doctor prior to his father. From 1879 to 1949 the community health had been guarded by seventy years of Caldwell doctors. 

J. Willard, had graduated from the Steamboat Rock High School in 1896 and took his premedical studies at Grinnell College and Drake University. He was graduated from St. Louis College of Physicians and Surgeons in June of 1901 and on September 18, of the same year, he married a local girl, Myrta Mabel Robertson. 

Dr. Caldwell served with an army ambulance unit during the First World War, going overseas in June, 1918. He was at the front when the armistice was signed and was discharged with the rank of major. 

Dr. Caldwell, was more than a doctor. He served his profession and his community well. He became mayor of Steamboat Rock and served on both the city and county school boards. He was also a member of the American, State and County Medical Societies. 

Dr. Caldwell was 70 when he passed away on March 24, 1949 at his home following a six week illness. 

The community had already made arrangements to secure another doctor prior to Dr. Caldwell’s passing. Because of his advanced years, and his already limited practice, and in spite of their love for Dr. Willard, they had had a committee working on bringing a new man in for some time.
