As one added note I include a couple of interesting paragraphs that appeared in the Eldora Reform Herald on January 24, 1875, “Beer is the principal article of express matter received in Steamboat Rock now-a-days. Some folks use it to wash down the instant death they take.”
“R.C. Wright who is in the drug business at Steamboat Rock has taken a decided stand in regard to the sale of alcohol and other liquors. He refuses to deal out the poison to people who get sick so frequently and we understand he sells none at all. His course is commendable.”
There were beginning to be a large number of saloons in town (13 at the time) so the council also imposed a $75 licensing fee on saloons. Billiard and gambling tables were taxed $15 each, and saloons were required to close at 11 PM.
It wasn’t long before a fight broke out in on of these establishments and the owner was fined $10 for operating a disorderly house and not closing at the required time.
