SCOUTING

Pack 302 of the TaMaHa District of the Tall Corn Area Council of Cub Scouts was chartered in April, 1964. Mrs. Joyce Potgeter was instrumental in beginning the first cub scout pack. First Cub Master was Larry McDowell. The Steamboat Rock Community Club, H.A. Eckhoff, president, sponsored the cub pack. The first Den Mother were Norma Renkin, Alma McGrain and Joyce Potgeter.

Steamboat Rock’s first boy scout troop was sponsored by the Iowa River Conservation and Improvement Club, who also provided a place to meet.

Troop 302 was chartered in 1964, with Jerry Knight as Scoutmaster and Charles Luiken as assistant.

A year later in the fall of 1965, the first Girl Scout troop was formed in Steamboat Rock. They were known as the Pine District of the North Iowa Girl Scout Council of Mason City.

Topsy Readout was for the organization with the American Legion as sponsors. The program was for girls in the second through the twelfth grade.
