Not since Steamboat’s Centennial had there been such a celebration in town. In 1976 there was a grand nationwide celebration of our Nation’s Bicentennial. Steamboat Rock held a grand celebration that has not yet been outdone.
The two-day, “Steamboat Days” celebration was coordinated in honor with the Nation’s Bicentennial and Steamboat Rock’s 121st birthday.
Larry Williams was the chairman of the celebration held June 15 and 16, 1976.
Kicking off the event there was a water fight with several fire departments from surrounding communities participating.
Rainsbarger Days
A carnival was brought in that featured rides and games both evenings of the event.
On the second day there was a kiddies parade in the morning. The Iowa River Conservation and Improvement Club served noon and evening meals. In the afternoon, an “Almost Anything Goes” competition was held pitting Steamboat Rock against other area communities. In the evening a Bicentennial parade was scheduled.
